Modern airplane engines are extremely reliable. Since they are the core of each aircraft they are also essential business assets for every airline. Without them, airlines cannot generate any income.
In many aspects, engines are flexible. They can (to some extent) be switched to different airplane types; furthermore they are used not only for passenger´s traffic but also for freight traffic.
Engines have an extremely high reliability over a very long lifetime. Many aircraft engines are running for about 10-15 hours per day, more than 330 days per year.
